The OSRchivist

Rediscovering the magic of old school roleplaying.

RPGaDay 2025 22: Ally

Ever since reading Torchbearer, I’ve been struck with their description of adventurers. Lousy, good-for-nothing, down-on-their-luck losers. Who would ever want to become an adventurer? Only short life and a horrible death awaits you. It’s the question I now have when I think of why anybody would wnat to become a porter hireling for a group of PCs. Who in their right mind would do that?

So, to help with that idea, here’s a table of d10 possible motivations for hirelings! Let me know what you think about it.

d6 Why did they go to adventuring?
1 Needs to pay off student loans. This is the only job that requires no experience.
2 Addicted to adrenaline. Nothing quite hits like dungeons.
3 Can’t find any other work. Nobody will hire me.
4 Stuck in the job. Need this job to pay for last job.
5 Get rich quick. Just one good score needed.
6 Don’t want to fit in regular jobs. This provides freedom.
7 Trying to find enough like-minded adventurers to start my own group.
8 I want to see the world. Travel is included in adventuring!
9 I want to be like the cool adventurers the bards tell stories about!
10 I have a lot of violent tendencies and this is a socially acceptable outlet.
