I want to write about discovering the OSR
There’s so many blogs out there with sage advice, amazing designs, and people’s homebrewed games. I, however, am late to the party.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been gaming for about thirty years now—since the tail end of AD&D 2nd edition. My early roleplaying experiences were PC-based: Baldur’s Gate, Fallout, Wasteland, and so on. For tabletop, D&D 3rd edition was my first experience. Then came 3.5, Pathfinder, Worlds of Darkness, Burning Wheel, and Pathfinder 2nd edition. And somewhere between I stumble on this thing called “OSR”.
For a lot of creators out there, there’s a nostalgia for old experiences. There’s discussions of Google+ threads. Stories of home tables running for 10+ years. Old notebooks and binders being recovered from attics and basements. For me, I’m coming into this from the outside in: trying to figure out what this appealing playspace is.
So, in that ocean of advice blogs, expert GM tips, and homebrewed rules, I want to share the story of trying to figure it all out. As I test out systems and rules, as I try to make maps and write adventures, as I try to run OSR-style games for people, I will be posting about it here. Hopefully, it’ll help out others in discovering the OSR.
